Staff Buying Software
Microsoft Campus Agreement
Introduction
Campus Agreement is a Microsoft licensing scheme whereby the University can lease the use of a large range of Microsoft software on an annual basis. Use of this software is licensed only to members of the university, not including students. The cost of the license is based upon the number of staff on the University payroll. Software under the scheme will be licensed on all university owned machines, including in Computer Labs. Staff may use the software for University use at home when they are not at the university. Each department must keep records of copies installed. The full agreement and related information is obtained from links set out below. Where there is difficulty interpreting the rules in 'grey' areas, please consult IT Services. Unless a person is on the University payroll it is unlikely they will fall under the terms of the agreement.
Please also note that although a wide range of software is available, this does not necessarily imply that IT Services is able to support it on all hardware and in all situations.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
When did MS Campus Agreement at Loughborough University start?
1st August 2001, and has been renewed annually since. On 1st August 2008 we took out a Campus 3 agreement.
-
What version of Microsoft Campus do we have?
As of 1st August 2008 we have Version 3.
-
Is all Microsoft software free?
A selection is leased by the university and centrally funded. The includes the latest versions of: Microsoft ® Office ® Standard & Professional Editions, Microsoft Office Macintosh ® Edition, Microsoft Windows ® Upgrades, Microsoft BackOffice ® Server Client Access Licence (CAL), Microsoft FrontPage ®, Microsoft Visual Studio ™ Professional Edition and Microsoft ® Project. This means that you can update previous versions at no cost, and use previous versions. Windows Server versions are not included in Campus 3.1, and will have to be purchased separately under the Select agreement.
-
What if the Microsoft software I want is not available?
That should be no problem. You can buy any Microsoft software from a reseller, all that differs is the price. If the software is not available under Campus Agreement, the next cheapest option for University purchases is likely to be through MS Select for which we have an agreement. Ultimately any Microsoft Software can be purchased direct from a reseller.
-
How do I obtain copies of this software for my University-owned computer?
From your department. Each department has an administrator https://internal.lboro.ac.uk/it/uniwide/info/people/msca.html who keeps a log of all software copies made. They need to do this under the agreement, but also so that we can notify you of any updates.
-
Can I use Microsoft Campus Agreement software at home on my personal PC?
Staff can use any software available under the Staff Work @ Home scheme - see www.lboro.ac.uk/it/software/work-at-home.html. In addition there is the Microsoft Office 2007 "Ultimate Steal" Offer (for Windows computers only) - see www.theultimatesteal.co.uk/?cid=ukedu.
-
What about copies of Microsoft software which I've bought under Microsoft Select?
These are owned by your department in perpetuity. IT Services has a record of all purchases by departments.
-
What if, later on, the University decides to opt out of the Agreement?
We can opt out at any future time, but would only do so in full consultation with Faculties. Microsoft offers a buy back facility where we could buy up all the copies leased. It is, however, expensive and we envisage staying with the agreement in common with all the other Higher Education institutions who have signed up. Your copies purchased under MS Select remain the University's property, of course.
-
Can I keep the software when I leave?
No. Unfortunately this is leased software - and leased to the University, not you as an individual. If you leave the University you must remove any copies of software acquired under Microsoft Campus Agreement. This applies to visiting academics as well as staff whose contract ends.
-
Will I receive the latest version of Campus Agreement software products?
New versions will be made available to your Department Campus Agreement Administrator https://internal.lboro.ac.uk/it/uniwide/info/people/msca.html (restricted to members of the University). We will publish version news on this web document from time to time.
