Charged Printing Service
Printers
A wide range of printers are available to both Lab. and Office P.C.s which are connected to the network. In labs and open access areas the default printer will normally be a monochrome A4 printer nearby. You can change that to a different format, or different printer when you are about to print a document, normally by using the File, Print command.
Normally printers are named according to the room number in which they're located, followed by the department which manages them, their paper size and other details (e.g. monochrome or colour). For example, the A3 colour printing tray in the Service Desk room on the top floor of Haslegrave is n312_cc_a3c. Strictly speaking these are printer queue names, not printers themselves, and this is how we refer to them. There is a notice in each Lab. describing the printers available.
The sheets emerge from the printer preceded by a header sheet including your Login Name. The Login Name is your department code followed by your initials and sometimes a number e.g. psabc. There is a charge for each sheet printed, except for the header sheet. Please use Print Preview and spell checking and a moment or two proof-reading to ensure you don't waste paper and your time. We also have a list of charged printers (including printing prices) for your convenience at https://internal.lboro.ac.uk/it/uniwide/info/printing/printerlist.html.
Buying Printer Credits
Printer credits can be obtained from vending machines which take £1 or £2 coins at:
-
The Haslegrave Level 3 (top floor) Help Desk Room N312. Swipe card access out of office hours.
-
Pilkington Library Level 3 (the entrance level) on the concrete pillar in Open3 (to the right of the issue desk). Library hours.
You can also purchase printer credits from the Library Information Desk (minimum charge £5 if paying by credit card), or IT Services' Service Desk (minimum charge £5, card only, no cash), during opening hours.
Using the Kiosks to check print credits or to pay www.lboro.ac.uk/it/printing/kiosk.html.
Note that the Balance shown on the kiosk shows 50p more than the other mechanisms because it includes a 50p "overdraft" you are allowed.
Checking your Printer Credits is available from the Start menu in Windows Computer Labs - see www.lboro.ac.uk/it/printing/credits.html.
You can also Check your Printer Credits on the web at https://printers.lboro.ac.uk/scripts/balance.exe.
Note that the printers run by Media Services do not use print credits, you must pay in cash at their reception desk.
Printing from Windows Labs
All labs are configured to use the Library and N312 printers, and to use the nearest printer by default. There is a notice in each Lab. describing the printers available.
To print, it's best to select the Print option from the application's File menu; this gives you maximum control on which pages are to be printed and on which printer. From Office 2007, click the Office button at the top left, select the expand button next to Print, and then select Print. Unless you select a different printer, your work will normally appear from the networked printer in the room where you are working. To see where you are in the queue, use the Start button and look at the Settings, Printers option, and then the required printer.
Note for IT Staff: Instructions on installing printers are included in the Lab model build documentation.
