New generator system keeps IT services running during power cut
During the power outage on 17 June 2008, all central IT services hosted in Haslegrave, including Web site, e-mail, VLE, our Internet connection, and all corporate systems stayed up throughout the power outage, because of the emergency generator and battery-backed power supply (called an UPS) that Estates Services colleagues have commissioned since the last major power outage; we are very grateful for this work.
The main functionality of the phone system also stayed up throughout, backed by a large battery, though this was close to running out by the end of the power cut. Other parts of the phone system such as call attendant, voicemail, and the switchboard service are backed by smaller batteries, and these had run out before the start of the working day, hence these components of the phone service were not available.
Thus the good news here was that people making Direect Dial-In phone calls, external visitors to the central University Web site, staff or students working from home via the IT Remote Working Portal, and staff or students working in Haslegrave were not significantly affected by the wider power situation.
We extend our thanks again to out colleagues in Estates Services.
