HallNet Reminder: File Sharing
IT Services would like to take this opportunity to remind you that using peer to peer software on HallNet is forbidden. This includes (but is not limited to) bittorrent, ares, edonkey and kazaa.
While we recognise that such software can be used for legal purposes, the truth is that most of its use is for sharing copyrighted material without permission.
If we receive any reports from copyright holders that you have been found to be sharing copyrighted material you may be subject to a lengthy ban from HallNet. Repeated infringements will see you subject to University disciplinary procedures. Copyright holders may also choose to take their own legal action against any perpetrator.
We are only one week into term and already we have had to ban three students for a period from HallNet due to this type of activity.
Please ensure that you are not the next to be caught by not running this type of software on your computer when connected to HallNet. Or even better, remove the software from your computer entirely.
Do not think this will not happen to you as you only share one or two files very occasionally. It may only take one time to get caught!
