Services During the Easter Vacation and Bank Holidays 2008
IT Services will continue to run a "weekend" service over the University's Easter closure. This will mean that staff will not be available from 5:30 p.m. on Thursday 20th March until 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday 26th March 2008.
The Computing Labs on the 3rd floor of the Haslegrave building will be accessible by swipe card. Staff and students will need their cards to gain entry to the building. The printers in N312 will be available for use until they run out of paper.
Other IT Services Laboratories will be closed until Wednesday 26th March 2008. We wish you a Happy Easter.
Similar arrangements will apply on Monday 5th May (May Day) and Monday 26th May 2008, being national holidays. The Late Summer Bank Holiday is on Monday 25th August 2008 and the University will also be closed on Tuesday 26th August 2007.
Staff computers
Please ensure that you switch your staff computer off over this Bank Holiday weekend.
Switching computers off is important because:
-
Until it is restarted any automated patches sent to the computer will not be applied, leaving your P.C. vulnerable to attack.
-
The power consumption is an unnecessary cost to the University and to the environment.
It is therefore important that staff get into the habit of switching off their computers, if not every night, then at least each weekend.
We do understand that a few staff need to run long computer simulations overnight or over weekends. In this case it is even more important that these computers be restarted regularly and frequently, in between such runs.
To switch your computer off, we do not merely mean putting the screen into power-saving mode, we mean shutting it down fully. For Windows computers:
-
From the Start button select Shut Down.
-
From the Shut Down Windows dialogue select Shut down and click OK.
