Domain Registration and SSL Certificates
Introduction
You may wish to have your own web address (known as a domain name) for your web pages. These are handled by external companies (whose job it is to ensure that no two web sites have the same name), and there is a fee for this. IT Services, however, will handle the registration for you.
All requests should go via the Service Desk, E-mail IT.Services@lboro.ac.uk, telphone 2320. This way they will be entered into our Service Desk system.

Managing a domain registered by a third party costs £15 per year.

.ac.uk domains cost £94 per year.

.gov.uk domains cost £100 per year.

Other .uk domains cost £20 per year (.org.uk, .co.uk, etc.).

All other domains cost £40 per year (.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .it, .tv, .fm, and .us).

If you would like e-mail re-direction to an lboro.ac.uk address this will cost £30 per person hour, with a minimum of one person hour. We can achieve a considerable number of redirections within one hour, and we do find that the majority of requests are satisifed within the £30 charge. Please contact the Service Desk for a quotation if you have a large number of e-mail addresses.

The cost of moving a domain to the University will cost one year's registration fee.

Domains can be renewed yearly and automatically re-billed.

All .ac.uk domain registrations are handled by UKERNA, and special rules apply. All these domains must meet the JANET (UK) Eligibility guidelines www.ja.net/services/domain-name-registration/register.ac.uk/eligibility-ac.html. When requesting a .ac.uk domain, please include a paragraph providing evidence that the request meets the eligibility guidelines. Please note that even if your request is unsuccessful, you may be liable for the full registration fee of £94.

All other .uk domain registrations are handled by Nominet. They have to comply with Nominet's Terms and Conditions http://www.nominet.org.uk/registrants/aboutdomainnames/legal/terms/.

SSL Certificates can be purchased to provide the encrypted transfer of data to and from your web site. These SSL certificates can only be provided for use if you are hosting your website on a dedicated machine.
We can currently offer SSL Certificates for .ac.uk domain names for a one off charge of £30 for two years. After two years we may not be able to renew the certificate at that rate and may have to charge as normal.
SSL Certificates for any domains other than .ac.uk are charged at the full rates as below:

We register the certificates with a company called GeoTrust Europe, or ipsCA for the .ac.uk certificates.
