Setting up Outlook Express at home

Follow the instructions for students or staff as appropriate below.

These instructions assume that you already have an account with an Internet Service Provider which is correctly working. You must have a recent version of Outlook Express such as 5.0, 5.5, or 6.0.

  1. Run Outlook Express (you can work off-line).

  2. Select Tools then Accounts... from the menu.

    Internet Accounts - Mail tab.[d]

  3. Click on Add then Mail... to add a mail account.

Internet Connection Wizard - Your Name.[d]

  4. Fill in your Display name (the name you want recipients of your mail to see as the "From" entry), e.g. A. Persson. Click Next >.

    Internet Connection Wizard - Internet E-mail Address.[d]

  5. Enter your E-mail address, e.g. A.Persson@lboro.ac.uk. Click Next >.

    Internet Connection Wizard - E-mail Server Names.[d]

  6. When you get to the E-Mail server names box:

    • Students: Select IMAP as "My incoming mail server is", then enter student-mailin.lboro.ac.uk into the "Incoming mail server", and isp-mailout.lboro.ac.uk into the "Outgoing mail server". Click Next >.

    • Staff: Select IMAP as "My incoming mail server is", then enter staff-mailin.lboro.ac.uk into the "Incoming mail server", and isp-mailout.lboro.ac.uk into the "Outgoing mail server". Click Next >.

Internet Connection Wizard - Internet Mail Logon.[d]

  7. In the next window and then give your username (e.g. cccb) as the Account name (not the e-mail address which Outlook Express gives you as the default), leave the Password entry blank, and de-select the Remember password check box. Leave the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) option not checked. Click Next >.

    Internet Connection Wizard - Congratulations.[d]

  8. Finally click Finish to create the account.

Internet Accounts - Mail tab (again).[d]

  9. Sadly this account does not now work and you have to make a few small changes to it to make it work. Select the newly created account in the Internet accounts window, click the Properties button, and then select the IMAP tab.

    Mailbox Properties.[d]

  10. In the "Root folder path" entry you should enter Inbox. You should also select the "Store special folders on server" option if it isn't already set.

  11. Optionally you can select the "Check for new mail in all folders" option, but if you have a lot of stored mail then this probably isn't a good idea from home.

  12. Click the Advanced tab.

    Advanced.[d]

Under Server Port Numbers, under Outgoing mail (SMTP), select the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox [the first checkbox]; now set the Outgoing mail (SMTP) option to 465.

Also under Server Port Numbers, under Incoming mail (IMAP), select the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox [the second checkbox]; note that the Incoming mail (IMAP) option will automatically be set to 993.

  13. Click on the Servers tab.

    Servers tab.[d]

Ensure that the My server requires authentication checkbox is selected.

  14. Click on OK when you have done, and close the Internet Accounts window.

    Internet Accounts (last time).[d]

  15. When you attempt to read your mail, you will be asked for your Password. You must use your Active Directory password (the one you log in with on your staff computer or in a computer lab). Members of staff who have been here a while should note that this is usually not your "old" e-mail password.

  16. It may ask you about synchronising your folder list. If it does, then you do want to do this as it gets your folders up to date in Outlook Express. If you are working offline, it will open the connection window and ask you to confirm to connect.

    Go online and download folders?[d]

  17. When the messages are downloaded, depending on your Internet Service Provider, you may need to manually disconnect: right-click the modem icon in your task bar and select Disconnect.

    Modem icon.
