Apple Mail Configuration for off-campus

This is for Students and for Staff using the "old" staff e-mail system.

Your Mail Preferences - Accounts pane should look like this when configured.

Accounts.[d]

Note the Incoming Mail Server setting as staff-mailin.lboro.ac.uk. If you receive a Security Certificate warning message you may find that the server is set as simply staff-mailin - this will not affect the functionality of your mail service but you will receive this warning frequently, append .lboro.ac.uk to remove the message.

The Description describes your account - in our example we have used your University e-mail address. The Email Address is your e-mail address. The Full Name is your full name as you would like it to appear on e-mails.

The User Name is your University login identifier (starting with your two-character department code, e.g. ccdpjk). The Password is your Active Directory password which you log in with. This is not necessarily the same as the "old e-mail password".

The Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) should be set to isp-mailout.lboro.ac.uk.

Select the Advanced tab of the Accounts preferences.

Advanced Acoounts.[d]

Ensure that Port 993 is selected and Use SSL is checked. You do not have to enable the Automatically synchronise changed mailboxes checkbox, although you may choose to do so.

Return to the Account Information tab, and click on the Server Settings button in the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) section.

SMTP Server Options.[d]

Configure the pane as shown above, with Outgoing Mail Server set to isp-mailout.lboro.ac.uk, and the Server port set to 587. Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) should be set, and Authentication should be set to Password.

Outlook Express users please note that your Server port should be set to 465 rather than either 25 or 587.

It is important to note that Port 25 may still work for users who are not using either A.O.L. or Outlook Express, but it is possible that Internet Service Providers may decide to re-route port 25 traffic through their own server at any time. By changing it in advance to 587 (or 465 for Outlook Express), users can ensure that this will not be an issue.

Use your Active Directory User Name and Password. Please note this is not the "old e-mail password".

When you quit the accounts preference pane in Mail you will be asked to Save Changes.

Save Changes.[d]

You must ensure that you do so, or the configuration will be lost.
