HallNet
What you need before you start
To use the Hall Network Service HallNet, you need the following:-
- To be living in accommodation which has been networked.
- A computer running Windows Vista or Windows XP or Apple Macintosh OS/X10.4 or above that meets the Minimum hardware requirements see www.lboro.ac.uk/it/hallnet/minspec.html.
To successfully connect to the network with other types of computers, such as a Linux computer or earlier Windows operating system, you would need to configure the TCP/IP software, and unfortunately IT Services can give you very little assistance. However, if we detect problems caused by software or hardware, we may have to disconnect your socket to protect the service to other users. Additionally you may not be able to access all the services offered. Please see the additional information provided for Apple Macintosh users at www.lboro.ac.uk/it/hallnet/mac-guide.html or for other unsupported operating systems at www.lboro.ac.uk/it/hallnet/expert-guide.html if required.
- To have installed and configured an Ethernet (Network) card in your computer.
You will then need:
-
To have an Ethernet cable (collect one from the Service Desk at IT Services if you do not already have one).
-
To connect your computer to your data socket with the cable provided.
-
For Windows users: Follow the instructions in the Windows Vista step by step guide at www.lboro.ac.uk/it/hallnet/vista/ or the Windows XP step by step guide at www.lboro.ac.uk/it/hallnet/xp/ to connect, configure and secure your computer for use on HallNet.
-
Otherwise, follow the additional information provided for Apple Macintosh users or for other unsupported operating systems if required.
-
To register to use the service (see www.lboro.ac.uk/it/hallnet/stureg.html).
