Word 2003
Word 2003 and web pages
1 - Tags Displayed
When you open web pages, e.g. on the Learn server, in Word 2003, they may be displayed with "tags" displayed. This makes it difficult to edit them, and difficult to see how the output would look in a browser.
To turn off this view, press Ctrl+Shift+X.
2 - Save As Web Page and Save As...
If you use the File menu Save As... option, the default Save as type: is set to Single File Web Page.

This option must not be used. You must click on the drop-down icon next to Save as type: and select Web Page, Filtered. (Note that there is an option Web Page, but the Web Page, Filtered option will produce smaller web pages - this will definitely be appreciated by anyone attempting to access your course materials over a dial-up line!)
Similarly, if you use the File menu Save As... option, choose Web Page, Filtered and never Single File Web Page.
3 - Page Title
Note also the Page title: text, which Word will attempt to give a sensible value from the first text on your web page. The Page title is important because:
-
It's used by Search Engines such as Google to determine what your page is about, and
-
It's used by browsers when the end-user adds your page to their Favourites: the Page title will become the description in the Favourites list.
Check the Page title and, if necessary, click the Change Title... button to assign a sensible title to your web page.
