Staff Desktop XP Mobile Service
Introduction
The XP Mobile service is the first managed service offered by IT Services aimed specifically at users of laptop and tablet computers. It is built on the established XP Staff Desktop Service and offers additional features to maximise the benefits of mobile computers. These include:
-
Support for multiple managed wireless networks.
Note: It is only possible to support the use of wireless networks provided by IT Services. Support cannot be given for home networks or those provided by third parties.
-
Availability of security patches when away from campus.
-
Greater flexibility with access rights.
Note: Increased access rights may be granted, where there is a genuine requirement, at the discretion of your department / IT Support.
These extras have been added following consultation with mobile computer users and IT Staff to add convenience for users and allow them to make the most of the advantages offered by mobile computers. They will make it easier to make use of the new wireless facilities on campus and at other partner institutions, networks, printers and other facilities at home or away and will mean that fewer updates are required when the computers return to the campus network. In order that these computers are managed and updated with new software and service changes it is still important that they are connected to the University campus network reasonably regularly.

Wireless
If you have already enabled wireless networking on your laptop, then it will be automatically configured to connect to the lboro network. Note that you will need to turn on wireless networking on your laptop. This is done on most laptops using a physical switch. Please refer to your documentation or IT support for more information.
If you have not already enabled your wireless networking, you should select Wireless Networking - Enable from the list of optional applications (see www.lboro.ac.uk/it/desktop/xp/optional.html) available to your computer. This will configure your laptop to use the University's wireless network.
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions at www.lboro.ac.uk/it/wireless/faq.html if you have any problems, or contact your local IT Support.
